Description:

Many problems within organized psychoanalysis can be traced to power dynamics. This can in turn have detrimental effects on psychoanalytic teaching and also can negatively affect the autonomy of the candidate with their training cases. The presenter offers ethical considerations and ways of avoiding these problems.

Learning Objectives:

Following the presentation, participants will describe :

  1. Factors that have led to problems and ethical violations in psychoanalytic organizations.

  2. Ways in which idealized transferences can impede learning for candidates.

  3. How the pressure to graduate hampers the psychoanalytic process for candidates in their control cases.
