Dr. Powell is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (NYC) and The Psychoanalytic Association of New York (PANY) (NYU affiliated), and is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell Medical Center in NYC. Dr. Powell attended medical school at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, completed her residency at Cornell Medical Center, The Payne Whitney Clinic and completed a two year fellowship in Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, completing her psychoanalytic training at Columbia University Center for Psychoanalytic Training and Research. Dr. Powell is the vice-president of the American Association for Psychoanalytic Education, founding member of Black Psychoanalysts Speak, and is co-chair of the Holmes Commission, Commission on Racial Equity in the American Psychoanalytic Association (CO-REAP). Dr. Powell has spoken and written extensively about race, racism, and gender issues. Recent presentations include: January 9th, 2021. An American Association for Psychoanalytic Education (AAPE) Zoom Webinar: Race Matters in Psychoanalytic Education: Exploring conflicts for analytic trainees of color and resistance to change. On Sunday, January 30, 2021: Psychoanalytic Training Program Open House: Lost in the Labyrinth of Race and Identity. Presenter: Guillermo Valdes, MD. Discussant: Dionne R. Powell, M.D. February 20-21, Dr. Powell spoke at the Georgia Psychiatric Physicians Association (GPPA): Racial Silence: bringing race and ethnicity into the clinical and training situation. And at the Atlanta Psychoanalytic Society (APS): Good trouble: how psychoanalysts can get out of their own way when it comes to race. And was the discussant for senior candidate, Nisha Shah’s presentation: Of Hate, Envy, Identification and Love: Racism in a 7 year Analysis. On February 28, 2021, Dr. Powell received the American Psychoanalytic Association Candidate’s Council Master Teacher of the Year award. Award presentation: A movement not a moment: sustaining a diverse, racially inclusive approach to psychoanalytic and psychotherapy education.

2018 Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association (JAPA) paper Race African Americans, and Psychoanalysis: Collective Silence in the Therapeutic Situation, that won the new author JAPA prize in 2019.
