Course: The Clinical Work of W.R. Bion

Learning Objectives:

1. To describe an understanding of the history and development of Wilfred Bion’s thinking about psychoanalytic theory and technique as it evolved from his clinical work and within the broader context of the history and development of psychoanalytic theory in general.

2. To summarize an understanding of how Bion’s ideas are applied in the practice of psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

3. To utilize an increased self-awareness in his or her personality of the subjective states of mind that Bion calls attention to for the everyday practice of psychotherapy and psychoanalytic treatment.

Joseph Aguayo, PhD is a Member of New Center for Psychoanalysis, an institute affiliated with both the American Psychoanalytic Association
and the International Psychoanalytical Association. Training and Supervising Analyst at the Psychoanalytic Center of California, and a Guest Member of the British Psychoanalytical Society.   He currently maintains an online private practice in his home in Laurel Canyon.  He 

currently is completing a book on the evolution of Bion’s clinical method of inquiry with a team of British colleagues:  R.D. Hinshelwood, Sira Dermen, and Nicola Abel-Hirsch—Bion’s Own Clinical Work:  His Method of Clinical Inquiry, (a submission for Routledge Bion Series, Howard Levine, general editor).  

Dr. Aguayo developed a series of 16 video-conference lectures:  ‘Introduction to the Clinical Work of W.R. Bion’ for Chinese students of psychoanalysis in Shanghai, (Ken Zhang, Director).  His most recently submitted paper is to the Psychoanalytic Quarterly and is co-authored with Maxine Anderson Peter Goldberg, Caron Harrang and Bruce Reis and is entitled:  ‘On the Psychoanalytic Work of Thomas Ogden:  A North American Regional and Group Perspective on British Object Relations Theory.’ 
Over the last 20 years, Dr. Aguayo has been a frequent contributor to he International Journal of  Psychoanalysis, the Psychoanalytic Quarterly and co-edited two books on Bion’s Clinical Seminars in Los Angeles, (2013); and Buenos Aires, (2017).  He has also participated and presented consecutively on Klein and Bion’s work at the International Psychoanalytical Association’s bi-annual Congresses since 2002.
